Line Up
The Tahini Ensemble is a dynamic collective of musicians from diverse backgrounds who met in Hamburg, Germany. Its lineup evolves with each project, concert, and collaboration.
Their music blends jazz, classical, Arabic and world music, traditional Brazilian folk, improvisation, and contemporary fusion, creating a unique and ever-evolving sound.
In the autumn of 2020, the Tahini Ensemble took the stage for the first time, introducing a sound shaped by musicians from different cultural and musical backgrounds. The ensemble’s early sound was strongly influenced by oud player Hicham El Madkouri, whom the group met in a café in Hamburg. Hicham later brought his friend Josue Morales into the group, who became an important part of its rhythmic foundation. The ensemble was also shaped by director Samieh Jabbarin, who had previously worked with Thomas Yang de Pfeiffer and Nicholas Morales, encouraging them to question their understanding of music and explore its ability to create moods and emotions. Although Hicham eventually returned to Morocco, the connection remained, with the promise of future collaborations and concerts there.
As the ensemble evolved, new friendships and collaborations brought new musical influences. Sara Rayén, a flutist, guitarist, and composer, became part of the group before moving to Sweden to continue her studies. Isis Penido, a close friend and now one of the defining faces of the ensemble, introduced new inspirations that led Tahini deeper into the rich traditions of Brazilian folk music. Samer Badwe later joined on qanun, bringing his distinctive sound and improvisational skills, while Kevin Lara joined in 2026 as a second percussionist, expanding the ensemble’s rhythmic foundation. Over the years, many musicians and interpretations have shaped Tahini’s sound. The term “world fusion” is often used to describe their music, although the ensemble has never sought a single definition. Somewhere between Arabic and Brazilian folk traditions, woven together with jazz, classical music, improvisation, and contemporary influences, Tahini continues to create music that crosses borders and invites audiences to experience the journey for themselves.
